OMNIVISION Launches World’s First Complete Medical Imaging Subsystems for Single-Use Endoscopes and Catheters with Addition of OVMed® Cables
Nov 16, 2020

Combined with Portfolio of Medical CameraCubeChip® Modules and OVMed® ISP Boards, New Line of Cables Enables OMNIVISION to Uniquely Provide Optimally Tuned End-to-End Imaging Subsystems

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Nov. 16, 2020 — OMNIVISION Technologies, Inc., a leading developer of advanced digital imaging solutions, today announced at CompaMed the OVMed® Cable line of medical endoscope, catheter and dental cables, to create a platform in combination with the company’s portfolio of CameraCubeChip® wafer-level camera modules and OVMed® image signal processor (ISP) boards. As the world’s top supplier of medical imaging components, this addition also makes OMNIVISION the industry’s first supplier of complete, end-to-end medical imaging subsystems, enabling medical device OEMs to focus on differentiating their core endoscope and catheter designs, while accelerating time to market and obtaining a competitive materials cost.

The market research and strategy consulting company Yole Développement is expecting a 27% CAGR (1) between 2019 and 2025 (2), reaching US$241 million at the end of that period, for CIS camera modules for disposable endoscopes. “This market is being pushed by the addition of video and the shift toward small-diameter applications needing higher image resolutions. Additionally, medical trends are favoring single-use devices, including cross-contamination issues and strong regulations stemming from endoscope disinfection matters,” stated Jérôme Mouly, team lead analyst for sensing at Yole. “The ramp up is starting this year and will continue in the coming years as regulators enforce the use of disposable endoscopes for certain procedures, such as bronchoscopy, laryngoscopy and urology.”

OVMed® Cables provide high image quality with minimal artifacts, for the transmission of captured images from the endoscope’s distal tip, down the endoscope shaft to the proximal end. These cables are optimized for small module size, thin diameter, flexibility, mechanical robustness and cost. Additionally, they are electrically shielded for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and interference (EMI), which allows the cables to withstand energy discharges during multimodal medical imaging procedures inside the body, while eliminating interference with other devices in the operating room.

“Previously, endoscope and catheter designers had to source cables from multiple vendors, as no one offered cables for all of our CameraCubeChip® modules, which created both supply chain and imaging subsystem tuning challenges,” said Tehzeeb Gunja, director of medical marketing at OMNIVISION. “With the introduction of our OVMed® Cables, we now provide OEMs with a single source of supply and support for the entire medical imaging subsystem, covering our whole portfolio of medical camera modules and ISPs, and tuned for optimal performance by our imaging experts. Additionally, we plan to continue developing cable innovations to meet the market’s evolving needs, including plans for digital MIPI output with a resolution of up to 1080p at 60 frames per second (fps).”

OMNIVISION’s flexible design and manufacturing model allows it to provide semi-custom cable solutions based on customer requirements. Customizable parameters include short cables of 2.5 meters or less, long cables up to 5 meters, analog or digital MIPI output from 200×200 at 30 fps up to 720p resolution at 60 fps, as well as a wide range of connectors—all with or without LED illumination. Additionally, every OVMed® Cable undergoes comprehensive certification, qualification and testing, including testing for banned substances, operation tests, stress tests, sterilization, bio-compatibility and workmanship.

The new OVMed® Cables are sampling today, with volume production expected in 2021. For more information, contact your OMNIVISION sales representative: www.ovt.com/contact-sales.
