AutoSens 2022 Keynote: Dr. Eiichi Funatsu evaluates non-RGB color filter options in automotive applications

When it comes to safety within the automotive industry, the term “good enough” just doesn’t cut it. Concern about the health and safety of a customer should always surpass the bare minimum and reach as far as technological capabilities will allow. For that goal to be realized, there must be an entity at the helm, making sure no corners are cut and every small detail is treated with integrity, ingenuity and innovation at top of mind. 

During this year’s AutoSens in Detroit, Lead Sponsor, OMNIVISION showed up in a huge way, displaying exactly what it means to achieve the goal of inventiveness through analysis. Specifically in regard to imaging, OMNIVISION’s own VP of Technology, Dr. Eiichi Funatsu led a keynote address, laying out the ways the company has improved both human and machine vision applications in the automotive space.

Dr. Funatsu focused on the many angles as to why the automotive industry has shown a recent uptick in the use of non-RGB image sensors, as well as why the demand for smaller pixel size, while keeping low-light signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is of utmost importance to OEMs. He also laid out pros/cons study of the popular color filter arrays such as RCCB, RYYCy, RCCG and RGB, including the analysis of so-called Yellow / Red traffic signal differentiation issues. This study exemplified the necessary work that OMNIVISION is doing in this space to ensure consumers are equipped with the highest levels of automotive safety. 

With camera attachment rates exponentially increasing every year, due to both mandates and general demand, the need for safety-minded manufacturers like OMNIVISION are what will set the tone for the rest of the industry. OMNIVISION holds the top spot in the automotive space simply because it has both the experience and the willingness to deliver industry-exceeding solutions and integrity to OEMs when they need it.
