Low-Power OV13850 Delivers Best-in-Class High and Low-Light Performance

SANTA CLARA, Calif., — November 8, 2013 — OMNIVISION Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: OVTI), a leading developer of advanced digital imaging solutions, today announced the OV13850, a new PureCel® 13-megapixel CameraChip™ sensor for high-performance mobile devices. The OV13850 combines OMNIVISION’s most advanced process technology and design methods to enable best-in-class low- and high-light performance. In addition to dramatically improved pixel performance, the OV13850 boasts best-in-class power efficiency, making it an ideal camera solution for high-end smartphones and tablets.

“Industry analysts predict 13‑megapixel to be the fastest growing resolution within primary cameras for mobile devices in 2014, with the potential to reach sales of more than 330 million units in 20141. This anticipation stems from smartphone manufacturers’ push to upgrade box specifications for high-end smartphones to support capture of higher resolution images and HD videos,” said Harish Iyer, product marketing manager at OMNIVISION. “The low-power OV13850 delivers excellent high resolution video and images in an ultra-slim form-factor. Considering these end-user benefits, we expect the OV13850 to be a highly competitive offering for the next-generation smartphones and tablets. The OV13850 enables our customers to upgrade their cameras from 8‑megapixels to 13‑megapixels without sacrificing end-user experience or increasing system cost.”

The 1/3.06‑inch OV13850 supports an active array of 4224 x 3136 pixels (13.2‑megapixels). It operates at 30 frames per second (fps) for zero shutter lag and can seamlessly transition between recording video and still images. Additionally, the sensor supports 4K2K ultra-high definition video at 30 fps with full-horizontal field of view (FOV) and electronic image stabilization (EIS). The OV13850 also supports high frame rate 1080p HD video at 60 fps with EIS to enable high quality video recording. In addition, the OV13850 supports the timing for high dynamic range (HDR) video in 1080p HD video mode at 30 fps.

The OV13850 fits into an industry standard 8.5 x 8.5 x 5 mm module, enabling device-makers to quickly reap the benefits of our advanced technology in existing system configurations. The sensor is currently sampling and is expected to enter volume production in the fourth quarter of 2013.
